The function of vapour-permeable films, placed externally on the structure, is to keep precipitation water from seeping inside the roof structure and to allow the moisture trapped inside the building to escape.
These foils are called primary roof coverings as they are placed on the ready roof structure but before the installation of the roofing itself. Before roof tiles or other types of roofing are installed, the roof film can function as a temporary roof covering because it does not let in water from outside and thus protects the roof structure against precipitations. The roof film cannot, however, remain uncovered for more than four months (sometimes less, depending on the film type) as it is not resistant to long-term UV-ray exposure. The vapour-permeable film is placed directly on rafters or battens nailed to the rafter. The easiest and fastest way to fasten the film to rafters or battens is by means of a building stapler.
APPLICATIONS: - roof films protect the thermal insulation of the roof or stud wall against dampness from precipitation water and by allowing the moisture from inside the building to escape, let the wall breathe
- vapour-permeable films are used instead of rigid roof sheeting and roofing felt when the attic is to be heat insulated and ceramic or cement roof tiles or pantile sheeting are to be installed on the battens and counter battens. From all roof film types only highly vapour-permeable film can come in contact with thermal insulation.

VAPOUR BARRIER FILMS

Vapour barrier films protect thermal insulation against dampness from water vapour passing through partitions (walls and roofs) between spaces with different temperatures and humidity. These films are installed on the outer side of thermal insulation. APPLICATIONS: - Vapour barrier film stops the water vapour forming outside the house from getting inside the roof structure, thus preventing wooden rafters and thermal insulation from getting damp. Vapour barriers protect the house structure and thermal insulation from dampness.
- Vapour barrier films reflect heat and limit heat loss
